Five Overlooked Diamonds in the Rough at the Magic Kingdom!

Let’s look at five diamonds in the rough at the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World today. Although well-known, there are more popular attractions and restaurants that overshadow just how awesome these really were, and still are.

Take a peek! You just may discover your own diamond in the rough!

1. The Carousel of Progress

One historical attraction that has been around for decades is Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. This ride was first unearthed at the 1964 New York's World Fair. With animatronics that were unheard of for that era in time, this ride tells of the progression in technology that has been seen throughout the last century or so. From its introduction to the Magic Kingdom in 1975, this little gem has been providing us with entertainment for decades.

For 1920, this guy must be the historical version of Kim Kardashian. Look at that swag!

Why It’s Great:

• With the rotating stages to the four different eras of time in the show, this ride can accommodate a new audience in minutes. At Disney, time is money. So it’s kinda important not to watch that money fly away while you wait in line all day.
• It is an AIR CONDITIONED HEAVEN ON EARTH. When you are out there in blazing hot weather, you just may need a reprieve.
• It’s really very interesting to see just how far we’ve come. Although the end scene is now slightly dated, it still brings home the fact at what a rapid speed we have moved forward as a society in the last decades.
• It’s just plain whimsical and fun! Who can hold back from singing, “There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow! Shining at the end of every dayyyyy...”? I can’t. I can’t go a day without it. Seriously, it’s a text tone on my phone. 

No joke, it’s right there.

2. Churro Cart in Frontierland


This might seem super random, but wait for the explanation!

Why It’s Great:

• CHURROS, obviously.
• A less obvious reason; what goes with churros? Chocolate sauce. What else does the churro cart have? Mickey pretzels. What better combination than chocolate sauce and a Mickey pretzel? None. The combination of salty sweet goodness... yes please. Cheese sauce ain’t cutting it for me, and sadly that’s all the other pretzel carts seem to have.
• The line up usually isn’t too bad, so it’s going to be faster sustenance then that Dole Whip at Aloha Isle in Adventureland.

3. Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor

Getting its start in Tomorrowland in 2007, this attraction gets the whole family involved in the gags. With live actors controlling the on-screen monsters behind the scenes, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Why It’s Great:

• Wait times are very low quite often, so it’s a nice break from the shake and bake happening outside.
• YOU may get to be part of the show. Not many attractions are quite as interactive as one in which cast members select audience members they wish to involve by looking through movable cameras.
• The audience and backstage crew together can make for some really hilarious gags!
• It will seem magical to your children. They can talk and joke with Mike and Sully (among others) in real time. Dreams really do come true.

4. Swiss Family Treehouse

Based on the Disney movie Swiss Family Robinson and one of the original attractions in the Magic Kingdom, the Swiss Family Treehouse allows families to walk up steps in the trunk of the tree to visit various rooms based on the movie.

Why It’s Great:

• It’s a part of history for the park, being one of the original attractions that the first families visiting the Magic Kingdom could see. It’s great just for that nostalgia factor alone.
• It’s surreal, giving a Gilligan’s Island feel that is sure to inspire the imaginations of the young ones!
• For those who are interested in seeing how other individuals may live in different parts of the world and in different eras, this will be fascinating! Not to say it’s necessarily accurate, but it’s fun to picture how other people may have lived.
• Come on... who DIDN’T want to live in a treehouse at some point? Now you get a chance to live it out, albeit temporarily.

5. Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover

As an attraction that got its start in 1967 in Disneyland and at the Magic Kingdom in 1975, the PeopleMover is almost as old as Disney World itself. The PeopleMover provides you with a slower journey through the second floor of Tomorrowland’s attractions. As a fun fact, it is actually the last attraction to still have a sponsor in the park - Alamo Rent-a-Car. Pandora sponsoring Cinderella’s Castle does not count.

Maybe if you ask nicely, they will stop for pizza!

Why It’s Great:

• Themed as a mass transit system of the future, you get to see sneak previews of many of the more popular and extreme rides, such as Space Mountain. That’s the closest you’re getting me to that ride again.
• It doesn’t have as much of a wait time, so it’s easy to get a seat. Great for tired feet!
• Although Disneyland had its own version at one point, this is the only one left in all the world! You cannot get the experience of this attraction anywhere else.

This attraction is sure to be a family favourite if you climb aboard. Just don’t stand up on it.
