So, What Should I Bring with Me to Disney? A List for Those Who Want to Experience the Magic, Not a Sunburn!

Today, we’re going to talk about what a trip to Disney  World or Disneyland means in terms of packing to get through your trip.

First things first, I’m a pasty white Canadian. We don’t live in igloos (and I’m not sure the Epcot pavilion does us any favours), but it gets damn cold up here for about six months of the year. My exposure to the sun is not going to be that of a person with access to gorgeous beaches and beautiful weather year round. Therefore, I’m going to focus on safe sun. Also, skin cancer is a thing. No thanks.

Us in Mexico. Best believe I had my SPF 60 at all times. And yes, a hat even in the mall.

Below is a list of what I believe will be the difference between a great trip and a tolerable one. Because really, who likes to be soaked to the bone even if it is on Peter Pan’s Flight?

1. Sunscreen

Of course this is going to top my list. Remember, pasty white Canadian! I don’t have a tan in the dark like my husband, so I need to be extra careful. For us ghosties, I recommend something like Coppertone Sunscreen SPF 50+. With its spray nozzle, it is easy to apply multiple times a day. Those of you with darker skin than myself could probably get away with SPF 15-30.

If you have makeup on, a good facial option is brush-on sunscreen. Color Science* has a good one I use every day for both the protection it offers and how it keeps me looking fresh all day.

2. Portable Battery Pack Cellphone Charger

With how often you will be using your MyDisneyExperience app and taking pictures, a portable battery pack charger is a must! My last trip, I must have gone through 2-3 charges a day! I plan to bring a better phone this time (iPhone 7 plus vs the iPhone 6), so the additional battery power will help. That being said, you do not want to run out at any time, especially if you can get a Fastpass+ for Avatar Flight of Passage last minute!

You don’t need a Mophie pack to get the job done. This Belkin battery pack cost me $30 and got me through just fine.

3. A Small Towel

Bring a small towel with you to the parks. Sitting in gross butt water on Splash Mountain is icky.

4. Ziplock Bags

This one is especially a must if you are going to Orlando where it rains basically every day. Do you want a fried phone? I know I don’t. Keeping it in a ziplock when you’re not using it helps with peace of mind on those wet rides and during unexpected downpours.

5. Poncho

You’ll definitely want a poncho for those Disney World trips for each member of your family. Staying dry is going to make a world of difference in terms of being a happy camper or a Grumpy Dwarf.

See? Still in good spirits even though the fury of Posideon was bestowed upon us. Spoiler alert: we survived :)

6. A Hat

Even with all those cute little rose gold mouse ears you can get at the parks and on Etsy,* you should still plan to bring a hat. For those hot days, a hat can keep away heat stroke so you don’t toss your cookies right onto Br'er Rabbit.

7. Some Sort of Game or Book

If you really want to ride a specific ride, this may entail waiting in some pretty heavy lines. I suggest coming prepared to amuse yourself. We didn’t last time and we were both irritable by the time we got to go on Seven Dwarves Mine Train two hours later. That didn’t exactly put us in that ‘heigh ho’ spirit.

8. Portable Water Bottle

You'll definitely want to tote around a portable water bottle in the parks. Although you can get free water wherever concession is served, there is no guarantee it won't taste like swamp. Even if you like your water swampy as a jambalaya sunset, who wants to wait in concession lines when they could be on rides?

9. RFID Wallet Blocker

Why do I need this, you ask? Well, my friend, let me tell you a story.

Last time we were there, my husband was ever-so-fortunate to be the victim of credit card fraud. They skimmed him and used the tap function to make purchases at Home Depot of all places. We got it sorted, but skip the hassle altogether. It's not worth it.

10. Cold, Hard Cash

Let's be real, cash is king. Although you can pay with your MagicBand if you're staying on resort or utilise electronic payment methods, cash is accepted pretty much everywhere. In addition for us foreigners, paying foreign conversion fees of 2.5-3.5% to USE OUR OWN MONEY is pretty lame. Just watch out for pickpockets... and if you see them, tell them to have a magical day.

11. Travel Wedding Band

You may want to bring a cheap-o wedding band with you while you're on vacation. Going on rides, in the water, forgetting your ring in the bathroom, being puked on... the list is endless in ways you can lose or damage your jewelry. Personally myself, I'd rather just not worry about it.

12. Wet Wipes/Hand Sanitizer

Everyone touches that same table you're currently sitting at. Yes, even the guy you saw blowing his nose into his hands.

Back in 2014, there was a measles outbreak that lasted up to six months in Disneyland. When I went to Disney World in 2016, I caught mono and was down for the count for a month and a half. Not surprising considering Magic Kingdom alone can recieve up to 50,000+ guests daily.

Disney is like a daycare, but worse when it comes to diseases. Short of wearing a hazmat suit, make sure you're protecting yourself and your family.

When I next head to the parks, you best believe that these items will be in my Mickey backpack. What items will be in yours? Comment and subscribe :)
