Why We Went to La Hacienda de San Angel (Hint: for the Alcohol)

When I heard that La Hacienda de San Angel had a tequila flight, I knew it was game time. Ever since my husband and I gained a love and appreciation for Mexico, he has become quite the tequila connoisseur.

We made a reservation for this Table Service restaurant for our planned day in Epcot. As an aside, you can book more than one dinner reservation if they are not in the same time block. We were able to book for both La Hacienda de San Angel and Via Napoli with about a 2.5 hour time difference.

On to the Alcohol!

Chris had the premium tequila flight. As he noted, the tequilas are seasonal -what shows on website or app isn’t necessarily what you’re getting. As it stands, the current selection on the website is Casa Dragones Blanco, Casa Noble Joven La Cava Select Barrel, and Avion Reserva 44 Extra Anejo.

Differences in Types of Tequila

Before going to Mexico, my only experience with tequila was Sauza. For those of you who've tried it, you may well know that this is not considered to be a very good tequila at all! The most authentic tequilas are made of 100% agave, which makes a big difference in the taste.

There are a few different types of tequila you can purchase:

1. Gold Tequila

This type of tequila is typically not an aged tequila, with typically only 51% agave (like Sauza). A gold tequila can also be 100% agave if the gold colouring is achieved by mixing a silver tequila with a reposado or anejo.

2. Silver Tequila

Also called blanco tequila, this type of tequila is typically not aged more than two weeks.

3. Reposado

This type of tequila is aged for typically two months to a year in oak barrels before bottling. Their golden hue comes from the colouring of the barrels.

4. Anejo

Anejos are aged for typically one to three years. They are considered to be the best tequila for sipping because of their smoother flavourings.

5. Extra Anejo

The most aged of the tequilas, extra anejos are aged for over three years. The distinction between anejo and extra anejo has only been around since 2005, so this is the newest classification of tequila (and in our experience, well worth the price).

Chris got three types of tequila in his premium tequila flight: a blanco, a reposado, and an extra anejo.

The blanco was surprising in a good way. It was very good and had a smoothness Chris had not before experienced in a blanco. I tried it and just about choked. But then again, I'm a rum girl.

The reposado was a little harsher, but still good. It had a bit of a burn to it. It reminded Chris of a good, cheap tequila you could buy at home from the liquor store. In all, it was just average.

The finale was the extra anejo. Chris thought it would be darker, but it still smelled like what he would have expected. He did have his suspicions that he was provided an anejo and not an extra anejo. Unfortunately, it was not as good as ones we’ve gotten previously from Mexico. This was a bit of a letdown, given that extra anejos should theoretically have the most flavour.

In all, Chris rated the winner as the blanco. Weirdly enough, it was the smoothest of the three. We found this perplexing, but figured it may have been distilled to perfection to achieve this.

There was a chaser provided with the tequila to help cleanse the palette. It was almost like a very mild salsa. I tried it after trying the blanco and it did the trick. My palatte was primed for my own drink afterwards.

Chris's final thought was that the tequila flight was slightly above average but at a premium price ($31 USD for three shots. Ouch.)

I decided to play it safe and try the La Cava Avocado Margarita. It was mild with real avocado (you could taste the difference) and hints of fruitiness and floral notes. It was very smooth. The tequila had just the right amount bite to round it all out.

Our servers also provided us with some complimentary chips, which were pretty good. They tasted fresh, and were very crispy. The salsa and guacamole were both good as well.

Given our slight disappointment with the premium tequila flight, we rated the alcohol at La Hacienda de San Angel as 3.75/5 mouse ears.
